Unilever Shifts Marketing Focus, Will Leave Unlimited Hydroplane Racing

Today, USA Racing Partners announced that Unilever is leaving Unlimited Hydroplane Racing.  In a press release, they announced a shift in Unilever’s marketing focus and will discontinue its sponsorship in H1 Unlimited Hydroplane Racing.

USA Racing Partners owner Debbie Gregory indicated, “We want to extend our sincere appreciation for Degree Men Adrenaline Series’ support this season, and wish them the greatest success in the future.”  We at UnlimitedHydroplaneRacing.com want to wish Ms. Gregory and USA Racing Partners the greatest future success as well.

Also mentioned in the press release was the team’s desire to continue to field a team and that they are “pursuing ‘several outstanding opportunities.’”  That should give us all cause to consider the importance of this development.

Recently, UnlimitedHydroplaneRacing.com has been considering the future of the sport and the impacts of strategic movements, ironically, just like this one.  It gives me cause to pose a two-sided question, but need help from the Unlimited Hydroplane Racing community to sort out:

1) Does this mean a downward spiral of interest waning and sponsors leaving and teams folding?

or…

2) Does this mean that “several outstanding opportunities” indicates the potential for sponsors that might be a better fit?

This is not a commentary on Unilever’s products or its marketing message.  In fact, one could argue they have much to gain from the type of exposure that comes from Unlimited Hydroplane Racing.  But it does beg the question if whether a new type of sponsor or sponsors would be a better fit for the team and for the sport?

For example, consider sponsors that are more automotive related.  Consider sponsors that have a stronger affiliation to outdoor enthusiasts.  Consider sponsors who might be boating and water sports companies.

It is not what happens to us that defines us.  It is how we respond.

How do you respond from this type of development?

Dave
