South Florida Hydroplane Racing Still a Possibility
Almost a year ago, we posted a story about a possible renaissance for the historic and once-beautiful Miami Marine Stadium and how it might hold promise for a future Unlimited Hydroplane Racing venue.
Recently, our good friend and UnlimitedHydroplaneRacing.com supporter, Robert, asked a great question:
For years, we enjoyed the races at the Miami Marine Stadium and later in Tampa, at the Courtney Campbell Causeway. A local guy, Don Wilson, piloted the Miss Budweiser for years and we followed him. Any chance of a race being added in Florida? Thanks, Robert.
Time for an Update
First of all, thank you to Robert for a great question. Yes, another example of our sport’s Damn Smart Fans. While I don’t have any information about Tampa, I can certainly provide an update on what’s taking place in Miami.
Earlier this month, H1 Unlimited published a news story about the Florida State Legislature recently approving a $1 million grant to help restore Miami Marine Stadium. None of us need to be convinced of the value this classic water stadium holds for water sports in general, but especially, Unlimited Hydroplane Racing.
The grant is currently on Florida Governor Rick Scott’s desk for approval and all of us in our sport can help him do the right thing. There is no specific schedule for racing of course, but getting Governor Scott’s signature is a great first step!
