Live Streaming Frustration

With the San Diego Bayfair race upon us, we have one more chance to enjoy the best sport on earth – at least for this season.  To our friends at Bayfair and to everyone who is attending, have a wonderful weekend and well… have an adult beverage for me.

As a fan of Unlimited Hydroplane Racing, I love watching the exhibitions, the heats, and the races. As a regular guy, I can’t visit each venue to see the races in person.

The next best thing?  Live Stream.

The challenge that many are facing recently is the frustration with not knowing exactly what’s going on.  A couple of examples.

No Charge for CDA

Screen Shot 2013-09-01 at 3.18.58 PMFirst, it was the return of the Diamond Cup in Coeur d’Alene.  When I (and many others) went to view the final on Sunday, expecting to pay for the view, it started playing.

Yes, for free.

Now, we all like getting something for nothing, so I let it play (and was careful to not close the window just in case…) and enjoyed an exciting final round.

Considering that was the final, championship race for CDA, my guess is it was an oversight, not just an altruistic gesture.

While I enjoyed my “getting something for nothing” it is unfortunate that a revenue source was not realized for that broadcast.  Remember, I’m a fan of the sport – and the long term health of the sport.  The sport runs on money (in addition to high octane fuel) and it is a shame that an oversight somewhere prevented the sport we love from nurturing itself.

What’s Up with San Diego?

Screen Shot 2013-09-13 at 7.02.08 AMIn a more contemporary example, a Facebook fan poses an excellent concern about a post from the H1 Facebook page about San Diego’s live streaming.  Mr. Brooks is right on with his concern and question.

There is a quick mention reminding all of us about the live streaming beginning at 11:45 this morning.  Let’s be honest, we appreciate the heads-up reminder.  However, the issue of “cost” is back.

The cost issue?  It isn’t mentioned.

“It would be nice that you mention it is a $6 fee and what it covers.  Does this fee mean only for the day, for the whole weekend, what is required to pay?”

All very valid concerns and questions.

Craving Clear Communication

As fans, we simply need good solid, consistent information.  We want to “support the sport.”  As you can see from the repeat of the main page header graphic shown below, $6 is clearly shown.  To Mr. Brooks’ credit, it’s hard to know what I’m getting for my fin and single.

Screen Shot 2013-09-13 at 6.53.56 AMDon’t take a hammer to your computer screen, but do enjoy Bayfair weekend.  Whether you are there in person or enjoying a “lean-back” experience at home with that cold beverage, have a great time.

UnlimitedHydroplaneRacing.com wants to help the best sport on earth be as great as it can be.
