Coeur d’ Alene Diamond Cup: Coal Under Pressure

CDA VolunteerIn Jimmy Buffett’s Diamond as Big as the Ritz, he calls a diamond “coal under pressure.”

It is no secret the Diamond Cup has been under some pressure to perform. In my recent post, I cited the good news announcement about the race being a fully sanctioned event. While this is not good, but GREAT news, it hasn’t come without its challenges.

Coal + Pressure = Diamond Cup

In Diamond Cup Class, I shared my conversation with Doug Miller, President of the Coeur d’ Alene Diamond Cup Regatta. The “coal” that was a shaky start last year was the catalyst for Doug’s performance under pressure. The result will be an outstanding celebration in a few short months over Labor Day Weekend.

As Doug’s performance under pressure continues, it is wonderful to see the progress being made toward “Diamond” status. Just as it is rewarding to see a child mature and grow into an adult, it has been enjoyable to watch the details come together on the Diamond Cup web site.

Initially, the site was not much more than a placeholder while “issues” were being resolved last year. After a remake, it was virtually the site you see today, except that much of the information was stubbed out – a place for it, but not yet active.

Now, more areas are being fleshed out and the information is exciting.

More Damn Smart Fans

Regular readers of Unlimited Hydroplane Racing know my respect for our fans who know their… well… stuff. They know the teams. They know the races. They know the right questions to ask. (Watch for more stories in the future about some of the questions I’ve received about the Diamond Cup and passed along to Doug.) At this time I am calling on these Damn Smart Fans to help Doug bring this baby home.

Volunteer

One of the new areas on the Diamond cup site is for Volunteers. Think about throwing a party like this and you might want to plan on having a few close friends lend a hand. The Diamond Cup needs more than 500 friends to help this party be everything everyone envisions it to be.

The Diamond Cup needs help with everything from logistics to guest services. Aside from being a passionate fan, there are only a few requirements:

  • 18 years or older
  • Wear the volunteer t-shirt provided to you
  • Wear khaki pants, shorts or capris
  • Wear comfortable tennis shoes

You can fill out a simple Volunteer Application on their Volunteer page.

That’s it. You won’t receive compensation (remember, you’re a volunteer!) but you will get a “front-row seat for the most entertaining event of the Summer.”

It’s really very simple:

  • Locals get an experience of a lifetime.
  • Visitors can vacation in one of the most beautiful regions of the country.
  • Everyone who volunteers gets to be a part of the transformation of coal to diamond.

For more information, contact the good people of the Diamond Cup through their Contact Us page. Watch for more updates on this transformation as it unfolds.

Don’t miss this opportunity!

Dave
